How do I know if it’s Termites
There are a bunch of different types of termites but the two most common are Subterranean termites and Drywood Termites.
Subterranean termites are bugs that live under the ground. They live in large groups similar to ants and they are found all over Texas but are more prominent the closer you are to the Gulf of Mexico. The problem can be severe from San Antonio southward depending on the rainfall amounts for a particular year. The Subterranean termites look a lot like flying ants when they swarm, but the easy way to tell them apart is by their wings. They both have two sets of wings but the ants have one large and one small set while the termites wings are all the same size.
Drywood termites are usually found in wood that dry and has not rotted. During the fall months on the sunny days they will move to nearby buildings. These type of termites are mostly found in Southern California.
If you have a termite problem the damage these small insects can create is substantial. They will damage wood, flooring, sheetrock, wallpaper and sometimes they will even damage plastic. When a building is infested with termites it must be discovered and treated quickly or there will be huge losses for the owner of the property.
Some of the ways to tell if there are termites in a building are:
Seeing the termites, when the swarm they are often visible in the buildings or you may find wings that they have shed.
If there is damaged wood, look for mud tunnels with odd patterns.
Mud tubes coming from the ground to the foundation is also an indication. These mud tubes are going to be about as big around as a pencil.
If you have termites you will probably need the help of a pest control company. They can determine which type of termites you have and treat the house for you. Most companies have a 2 year warranty for their work.
